We specialize in timeless furniture rooted in simplicity and tradition.

Modern West Furniture Company owner Kim Stone stands in the window of a former metalsmithing shop at the old Victor Mine.

“I'm inspired by Danish, Japanese, and Shaker furniture. They share the philosophy of function and comfort, first and foremost, combined with quality and durability of material and method. Their minimalist aesthetic is forever trendy - they look great in any home, any season, any year.”

Owner Kim Stone grew up with woodworking tools in her hand. She learned the craft at an early age from her father, insisting on helping him with projects in his custom built woodshop.

Throughout college, Kim took classes in design, drafting, sculpture, furniture making, and sustainability. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Metropolitan State University of Denver and later, completed Master of Business Administration studies at Colorado State University.

Kim apprenticed with a fine furniture studio in Denver, Colorado that specialized in high-end antique reproductions. She made everything from cabinets, benches, and blanket chests to beds, dressers, nightstands, and dining tables.

There she learned - and fell in love with - traditional hand tools, joinery, and finishing. Today, she uses both modern machinery and hand tools to take the best of what each offers to a piece.

Kim and her wife, freelance journalist Sarah Scoles, live in Silver Cliff with their three (now four) dogs and two cats. They love Custer County’s storied history, its rural community, and of course, the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
